Sunayna Agha hails from Pakistan where intense flavors, bold colors and fresh foods are a standard of everyday living. As a young child Sunny, as she is affectionately known, had the opportunity to travel extensively; she also studied in London and Singapore. It was this worldly exposure that allowed her to gain an appreciation for the various customs and cultures she was continuously coming in contact with. Her attention would soon be turned to the local cuisines and the different cooking techniques used from place to place. While still at school studying architecture, and unaware that cooking would be her destiny, she continued to hone her culinary skills as she sought to gain the understanding needed to replicate the miraculous flavors and textures she was discovering.
If you ask her, she will tell you that her earliest memories of food revolve around her grandmother and her insistence for the very best. These memories had carried her through her travels, and after deciding that food would be her focus, she began performing small stints in her hometown of Karachi working any place that might give her the opportunity to get close to a professional kitchen. Never one to settle, she eventually established a small catering company alongside a tight knit group of family and friends. It was this experience that finally inspired her to pursue, not just food, but the culinary arts as a career. It wouldn’t be long before she'd set her sights on that well known food capital of the world, New York City. This is where she wanted to be. Never one to shy away from a challenge, she left Karachi to tough it out in the very competitive kitchens of Manhattan.
Sunayna Agha’s quick success in New York City is a true mark of her unflinching integrity towards every recipe, every plate and every menu she prepares. Whether it was working as a line cook, or leading a kitchen, Sunayna Agha always understood that her name had to stand behind the work. Anything but the best was not an option. Her philosophy remains the same to this day. From Karachi Pakistan to the big bright lights of New York City, Chef Sunayna Agha has come a long way to do what she does best...create.
